Star TSP143 vs Epson TM-M30 — Which Receipt Printer Should You Buy?
Both printers are genuinely excellent. Neither is a bad choice. The decision comes down to your specific setup — and once you understand the three or four differences that actually matter, it's obvious which one you need.
The One-Sentence Version
If you're running multiple POS terminals or need the most EPOS-compatible printer on the market: Star TSP143IV. If you're running a single iPad POS and counter space is limited: Epson TM-M30III.
Everything below is the reasoning behind that.

Speed — No Difference in Practice
Both print at 250mm per second. That's fast enough for any realistic restaurant or retail scenario. You will not create a queue at either printer under normal trading conditions. Speed is not a reason to choose one over the other.
Counter Footprint — Epson Wins Clearly
This is the biggest practical difference. The TSP143 lies horizontally — it's a solid unit, but it has a real counter footprint. The TM-M30III stands vertically with the paper loading from the top, and the result is a noticeably smaller horizontal footprint.
On a café counter or boutique retail desk where every centimetre matters, the Epson's form factor is a meaningful advantage. On a larger hospitality counter where you have space, it's irrelevant.
Connectivity — Depends Entirely on Your Setup
The TSP143's Ethernet option is its key differentiator. A network-connected TSP143 can be shared across multiple POS terminals simultaneously — one printer, multiple iPads or terminals, all printing to it. That's essential for any venue with more than one till point.
The Epson TM-M30III includes a Lightning connector for direct iPad connection without Bluetooth pairing. In practice, this gives you a more stable connection to iOS devices than Bluetooth — fewer dropouts, no re-pairing after iOS updates.
Neither advantage is inherently better — they answer different needs. Multi-terminal: Star. Single iPad with clean connection: Epson.

Shopify and EPOS Compatibility — Draw
Both are officially listed by Shopify. Both work with Lightspeed, Loyverse, Square, Tabology, and the other major UK EPOS platforms. Both integrate with Deliveroo, UberEats, and Just Eat via Bluetooth or USB.
Commandear stocks the Epson TM-M30III Just Eat compatible variant and TM-M30II UberEats compatible model for delivery platform setups. For Shopify-specific setup, see how to connect a Star printer to Shopify POS.
Build Quality — Star Has the Edge in Heavy Use
The TSP143 has the more industrial feel — heavier, more robust casing. Units in daily UK hospitality use consistently reach five years or more without significant issues. The Epson is equally well-built for moderate commercial use, but in very high-volume environments the Star's longevity is the better bet.
In a café running 80 receipts a day, this difference is academic. In a busy restaurant running 400, it starts to matter.
Price — Star Is Usually Cheaper
TSP143IV typically runs £180–£240. TM-M30III sits at £200–£270. The difference isn't dramatic, but the Star is generally better value when both models adequately serve the need.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Star TSP143 better than the Epson TM-M30?
Neither is objectively better — they suit different setups. Multi-terminal, Ethernet: Star. Single iPad, compact counter: Epson. The comparison above tells you which fits your situation.
Do both printers work with Shopify POS?
Yes. Both are officially supported. See the Shopify POS hardware guide for setup detail.
What paper do both printers use?
Standard 80mm thermal receipt paper. Quality matters — cheap thermal paper jams cutters and reduces print head life.
Can either printer serve multiple POS terminals?
The Star TSP143IV (Ethernet variant) can. The Epson TM-M30III is designed for single-terminal use.
Which is quieter?
Both are thermal and significantly quieter than impact printers. In a hospitality environment, neither will be noticeable over background noise.
